Part 3

Friends & Ghosts

Rachel

After almost being sacrificed at the altar, the last thing Rachel needed was to visit a club. At first, she’d been cautiously excited to spend some time with her friends, but less than an hour in, she was the only one sitting at the large table they’d secured.

Lucille was busy with her new beau, the reporter Rachel had always admired. Not that she’d been very impressed with the real deal. His articles were great, but the rest of him? Surprisingly boring. Mostly because he was more concerned with flirting with Lucille than finding out his stories happened to be closer to the truth than he’d ever imagined.

As she watched them on the dance floor, smiling at each other and taking every opportunity for their bodies to touch, Rachel wondered if this was why Fabian had refused to come. She had no idea why they’d broken up, just as she had no idea why they’d been together in the first place, but then she remembered he wasn’t here because he was coddling one of the cultists who’d kidnapped and tried to murder her.

Jan, of course, took advantage of the fact that his underage girlfriend was allowed in the club until midnight. The two of them were also on the dance floor, although apart from a bit of swaying there wasn’t so much dancing as there was snogging.

And as for the only two not in a relationship... Rachel glanced over at the bar. She didn’t know who they were kidding. Samantha might be sleeping with Cian, but she only had eyes for Matt. And he was, of course, as smitten as no half-demon had any business to be. They were supposed to order another round of drinks but seemed to have completely forgotten their task.

Rachel looked around the club again, annoyed that she’d left her e-reader at home. There was a book in her bag, but there wasn’t enough light to read it. And books didn’t change the fact she felt lonely.

“Sixteen years and he’s never fallen in love again.”

To Rachel’s surprise, the two non-lovebirds had managed to pry themselves from the bar and were making their way over with a tray of shots.

Samantha’s eyes were glued to Matt, though. “Not a single relationship?”

Matt put down the tray and pulled out a chair for her. “He said he had a short fling here and there, but that he never really felt ready to settle down with anyone.” He laughed as he sat down next to her. “And he’s trying to teach me about commitment.”

They both sat as far away from Rachel as they could. An oversight, probably, but one that Rachel felt keenly. She still didn’t know who they were talking about, not that she cared since it was all about sex again.

“It could be trauma. Your mother probably hurt him pretty badly.”

So they were discussing the sex life of Matt’s father now. The same man who’d taught Samantha at primary school.

Matt raised an eyebrow. “It happened sixteen years ago.
